Independent Light Dues Forum welcomes UK government’s positive light dues gesture

In reaction to the UK Government confirming a reduction in the light dues rate, Lars Axelsson, Chairman of the Independent Light Dues Forum, said:

“The ILDF members are pleased that Stephen Hammond MP has listened to our call for a reduction in light dues.

“After the inaugural London International Shipping Week, the Government has made good on their commitment to increase the UK’s business competitiveness.

“The progress on substantial cost base reductions by the general lighthouse authorities and an ending of the Irish subsidy is a major victory for my members who led the battle over a long period.

“We will carry on working with the Government and our industry partners to ensure the GLAs achieve further operational efficiencies to deliver sustainable reductions in light dues in the coming years.”

In a written ministerial statement, the UK government committed to:

  • a 1p net register ton reduction for 2014/15
  • a commitment to a further reduction in 2015-16
  • resolved moving the Republic of Ireland’s provision of marine navigational aids to a self-funding basis, and
  • resolved the pension deficit of the three GLAs.

Independent Light Dues Forum members include APL (UK), K Line (Europe) Ltd, Maersk, NYK Line (Europe) Ltd, NYK Line Ltd and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.

Lars is also the Head of Contract Management at Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.
