Keeping Somerset Local

When five Somerset district councils received a proposal from Somerset County Council that they should change to unitary status – essentially replacing the two-tier structure of local government with a single authority – they decided to mount a challenge against the plan.

Freshwater was commissioned to help the districts mount an effective campaign, bringing together all parties, developing key messages and running a local media programme.

The campaign achieved extensive media coverage and debate including local TV, radio and online coverage including over 100+ local press articles.  Almost half of the county’s electorate, 200,000 people, voted in the poll, a turnout that is considered to have been on a par with a general election, and 82% of voters said no to the unitary authority, as did the majority of other stakeholders.
